Chapter 1. The Second King Preston King sat in his Washington D.C. office, sighing as he stared down at files he didn’t feel like reading but knew he should. He stood up and went to the window, looking out at what he could see of the city. Washington needed taller buildings, he thought to himself. As it was, the damn regulations kept the buildings so that the Washington Monument was the tallest structure in the city. That was a shame. He liked the view from a tall building. But then again, Washington was where the levers of power were pulled and so this was where he needed to be. He’d grown up around power. Or rather, he’d grown up around money which, in American politics at least, equaled power. His father though had made sure that he wouldn’t be just another rich brat living off a trust fund. He had taken him abroad and shown him the battlefields of Europe and Hitler’s death camps, all of which impressed into his younger self’s mind the harsh reality of the world.
